RESUMO

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory developed a simple, efficient, and cost-effective replacement for the traditional glass column system used to monitor H and C emissions from rooftop stacks. The primary goals in developing a replacement (the modified jar system) were to 1) maintain or improve collection efficiency while keeping leakage to less than 5%, 2) simplify the set-up process, and 3) reduce costs. Both the traditional glass column assembly and the modified jar system were operated in tandem for a 13-mo period. Results showed that the modified sample jar system provided equivalent or improved collection efficiency for both H and C. Additional advantages included reduced leak-test errors, quicker and simpler set-up, and material costs that were reduced by nearly an order of magnitude.

RESUMO

We report the case of a child with congenital nonbullous ichthyosiform erythroderma on long-term isotretinoin who developed progressively worsening ichthyosis along with recurrent bouts of sinusitis. Endoscopic sinus surgery revealed osteophytes, most likely an isotretinoin-related adverse event, and post operatively the patient's sinus disease and skin disease both dramatically improved. This case represents the first report, to our knowledge, of ichthyosis improving after endoscopic sinus surgery.

RESUMO

A greater utilization of endoscopes in the evaluation and surgical management of pediatric sinus disease, in addition to the increased sensitivity added by CT diagnosis of sinusitis, has given physicians a heightened awareness of sinusitis in children. Advances in immunology, both diagnostic and therapeutic, have created a more multidisciplinary approach to the management of sinusitis in the pediatric patient. This article will discuss important co-existent diseases, the medical management of pediatric sinusitis, the indications for surgical intervention and outcomes and sequellae of the management of this disease process.
